The Book of Romans answers the questions about ‘how’ fallen beings, plunged in the degradation of sin and who, by nature, are enemies of God, can be ‘restored’ to full harmony with the Divine Ideals, without God having to cease to be Just on the one hand, and on the other, without God ceasing to be a Merciful Being.
Romans reveals a God, not only who works Justice, but who by nature is Just, and shows us the elegant, masterful and kindly way in which He acts, with His creatures in misfortune, due to the destructive effects of sin.
The method chosen by God to reach man is called the Gospel. It is the good news that while man has been at enmity with God, He seeks him with intense compassion to win back His friendship. While man distrusts his Creator, He trusts and waits for man to respond to His initiative saturated with love. The Gospel is God’s answer to the cry of those hearts that long to be freed from the chains of evil that imprison their souls, but are powerless to free themselves from them. The Gospel reopens the door to paradise to all those who cease to resist the attraction of Divine Love and embrace by faith the ‘tree’ of the Cross, where the Son of God died for them. It is in the Gospel, where the maximum revelation of God’s Love for man is revealed with meridian clarity, showing us a God who possesses everything, and who gave EVERYTHING. Yes, because the Gospel is not only good. It is the manifestation of the supreme love of God, revealed in a Person: Jesus Christ.
The apostle Paul in deepening his appreciation and knowledge for the scope and expansion of the Gospel exclaimed: “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because of the power of God unto salvation to everyone who believes…”
The essence and substance of the Book of Romans is synthesized in this brief but significant sentence: “The just shall live by faith”. But it is not your faith, or mine, that has life-giving power. Neither is the presumption so popular in our days and so similar to the true faith. It is the Faith of Jesus, which led him to depend entirely on the Father and which kept him in faithfulness to God and which, by it, condemned sin in the flesh’, so that the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us’. Thus what was lost by the entrance of sin has been restored by the Gospel, that is, by Jesus Christ. God made flesh; it is by His perfect righteousness, the fruit of His perfect obedience, that all of us who, by faith, accept Him as Savior and Redeemer, are restored to the perfect state of holiness, which Adam enjoyed before his disobedience. For justification in Christ is not only that our sins are forgiven, but also that we are resurrected with a new nature, similar to the nature with which Christ lived among men, as a man.
“Therefore being justified by faith, (that of Jesus working in me), we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” It is the righteousness of Jesus that gives us entrance or right to heaven; it is by the righteousness of Jesus that enables us day by day to live in holiness, by His indwelling Spirit that enables us to live as “His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk (in obedience to all the commandments of God) in them” Ephesians 2:10.
